This week marks the beginning of a series of planned programs exploring Thomas Jefferson's character through the study of a selected group of his correspondence. We begin this week speaking with President Jefferson about a letter he wrote to John Page on December 25, 1762. The letter begins:

"DEAR PAGE, -- This very day, to others the day of greatest mirth and jollity, sees me overwhelmed with more and greater misfortunes than have befallen a descendant of Adam for these thousand years past, I am sure; and perhaps, after excepting Job, since the creation of the world."
