This week, President Thomas Jefferson discusses a letter he wrote to Elbridge Gerry on January 26, 1799. The letter is often referred to as "A Profession of Political Faith". The letter was written as the campaign for the presidential election of 1800 was about to begin. Jefferson insisted the letter be kept private, but clearly he wanted it to circulate to assure people of his political positions and his support of the federal Constitution.
