What did Thomas Jefferson mean by the phrase "pursuit of happiness"? In response to a listener question, this week's show explores those words. President Jefferson says he was paraphrasing the phrase from John Locke's book, Two Treatises of Government (published anonymously in 1689). Locke declared that political society was created for the sake of protecting "property," which he then defined as a person's "life, liberty, and estate."
